USB-C hubs for a New Year desk: map the ports before buying

A USB-C hub can simplify a New Year desk, but connector shape does not establish all supported functions. List the devices you want to connect and check the computer's port specification. Then compare the hub with that complete arrangement rather than counting sockets in the photograph.

Check the computer's supported functions

Read the manufacturer's information for the exact port and device model. Confirm the functions needed for displays, data and charging separately. Do not assume every USB-C port supports every capability advertised by a hub.

Map each accessory

List monitors, storage, keyboard and other devices with their connection requirements. Check supported display arrangements and data specifications in the hub documentation. A socket count does not establish that every port can provide its maximum capability simultaneously.

Read the power arrangement

Check whether the hub needs a separate approved supply and whether one is included. Read any stated power allocation or pass-through limitations. Follow both computer and hub instructions rather than choosing a supply solely because its plug fits.

Compare the complete desk setup

Measure cable length and where the hub will sit with equipment connected. Check operating-system and device compatibility directly with the manufacturer. Compare the delivered price including necessary cables or approved power parts before deciding between a compact hub and a larger dock.

A practical comparison

If the desk needs one display and two peripherals, map those exact requirements before selecting a hub with many extra ports. A smaller compatible device can be more useful than a larger dock with unsupported functions.

Your shortlist before checkout

• Confirm the computer port's functions.
• Map every required connection.
• Read power and simultaneous-use specifications.

Does a USB-C connector guarantee a hub will run my monitor and charge my laptop?

No. Those functions depend on the computer, hub, cables and power arrangement. Check the exact manufacturers' specifications together before buying.
