In Havelock North, there’s a local Maori tale: a giant by the name of Rongokako died when clearing a pathway through the hills to Waimarama in an effort to prove his love. Look out over the town today and you can’t miss the distinct peak of Te Mata-o-Rongokako. Just as European settlers who arrived in the region discovered, it’s easy to spot a sleeping giant in the landscape, and so the legend lives on. In honour of the story, we worked with a leading producer in the region to create this wine, which has won several plaudits from critics. Syrah grapes are harvested within the Bridge Pa Triangle District – one of the warmest pockets. Bottled early to capture its vibrancy, this juicy wine has rich flavours of plum and blackberry, with hints of spice and flowers, all balanced by fresh acidity. Pair with game meats or barbecued dishes.
