You can’t talk about modern German Riesling without talking about Johannes Leitz, a widely known ambassador of the grape and former Gault & Millau Winemaker of the Year. And his talents are part of a long tradition. The Leitz family has been in viticulture since 1744, and before Johannes took over in 1985 his mother ran the operation over a modest two-and-a-half hectares. This off-dry Riesling illustrates Germany’s supreme mastery of the grape. Crisp acidity cuts through a slight sweetness, while nuances of peach, apricot, apple and pear mingle with hints of spice and pineapple. Lively, crisp and medium-bodied, it’s delicious now but could be aged for another five to 10 years. Not that you’ll be able to resist that long…
