Black Friday tech deals: compare the specification first

A silver laptop, navy over-ear headphones and a boxed plain charger on a cream desk with cobalt mat, restrained autumn leaves outside the window. Clear tech comparison scene, no labels.

A tech discount can look convincing while hiding a specification you would not have chosen. Before comparing Black Friday tech deals, turn your intended use into a short technical brief. Focus on what the device must do, then compare the full package rather than the largest saving.

Start with the exact model

Copy the complete model number, including any letters after the main name. Check storage, memory, screen size and included accessories. Two laptops with a similar name can have different configurations. For headphones, distinguish wired from wireless versions and check the connection your equipment actually uses. Photograph or save your current device details if compatibility is unclear.

Separate condition from discount

Read whether the product is new, refurbished, open-box or used. Compare products in the same condition and check what the retailer says about the supplied accessories and cover. A lower price for a different condition is not automatically a better or worse purchase, but it needs its own assessment. Avoid assuming a sealed-looking image describes the actual item being sold.

Calculate the usable package

Add any cable, adapter, storage or software you need immediately. Check delivery charges and whether the advertised amount is an upfront cost or part of a recurring arrangement. For a gift, ask discreetly about the recipient’s existing equipment. Keep your shortlist to a few suitable models so a time-limited banner does not push you into a device you cannot use.

Before you choose

Is a bundle always better value?

Only if you need the included extras. Compare the bundle total with buying the useful items separately; leave unwanted accessories out of your value calculation.
