First ski trip shopping: decide what to hire before buying equipment

Ski rental bench with matching boots, skis, poles and coral helmet, bright alpine shop, all equipment whole in frame, no brand names.

A first ski holiday can produce a shopping list much longer than the trip itself. Before choosing equipment, ask your instructor or resort provider what you need and which items are available to hire. Separate specialist fitting from clothing purchases so a promotion does not become the reason for buying unsuitable kit.

Get an itemised hire quote

Ask what the package includes: equipment, fitting, adjustments and collection arrangements may be listed separately. Confirm dates, opening times and the process if something does not fit. Give the hire provider accurate information and follow their fitting advice. Do not choose specialist equipment solely from a discount listing.

Check clothing against the planned activity

Read the trip organiser’s recommended clothing list and compare that with your existing layers. Consider waterproof outerwear, appropriate gloves and socks without assuming everyday winter accessories will be suitable. Borrowing correctly fitting clothing may be an option, but inspect its condition and follow the supplier’s guidance.

Compare buying with transport and storage

If considering your own equipment, include travel charges, suitable bags and storage at home. A short first trip may not justify a large permanent purchase. Equipment that requires specialist fitting or maintenance should be compared on that complete basis, not just the advertised item price.

Keep room in the plan for instruction

Arrange lessons and ask the provider about the requirements for your level and location. Check helmet and other equipment guidance directly with qualified staff. A shopping guide cannot assess fit or readiness for the slopes. Prioritise suitable instruction and equipment advice before optional accessories.

Your shortlist before checkout

Should I buy skis before my first lesson?

Speak to a qualified instructor or hire specialist first. Hiring suitable equipment can let you learn what works before committing to ownership, depending on the trip and available services.
